Up to last year the prize money for Carnival Loft Racing Pigeon Club was spread over all races with no noticeable increase for the last race of the season.
It has come to our notice that many fanciers would prefer to compete for bigger stakes in the final race as opposed to the current structure where we attempted to cater for “less for more” to give more fanciers the opportunity to win back their entrance fees. Another reason why we structured our payouts this way was to prevent a situation where say four birds arrive at the loft together and the one that entered the loft first walks away with most of the money, leaving small change for the next three.
Combine liberations with neighboring organizations solves this problem to a certain extent, but then the losses tend to be more and fanciers loose out in the long run. From next season we will therefor do away with Saturday liberations as far as possible and have the races mainly on weekdays.
As far as prize money is concerned our strategy was to split it evenly between the numbers of races flown with no big payouts in the final race. Depending on the number of races up to 300 positions were paid out during a season. Some fanciers found this to their benefit but others not.
For 2020 we will attempt to pay out say R5, 000 to the winner of each race leading up to the final, leaving R50, 000 for the final race (race 9) winner plus a further R150, 000 split between positions 2 to 20.
From past experience we learned that at the end of the season fanciers are not that keen to nominate pigeons as by then some of their “bankers” are not performing. We have therefor decided that all pigeons entered will be eligible for the car race averages from day one. The results of race 7, 8 and 9 will count and the pigeon with the shortest flying time over these 3 races will win a brand new car in 2020 at no additional costs to the entrant.
A team of pigeons will cost R22, 500. You may enter 25 pigeons plus 5 reserve pigeons in the team. All reserve pigeons must be activated at R1, 250each before race 1 (by 31 May 2020). The option of sending reserve pigeons lies with the owner, you do not have to send any reserve pigeons. Should one of your main entries get lost before race one a reserve pigeon will without any charge take the place of the lost pigeon.
Should you wish to enter smaller teams you may enter 12 pigeons at R13, 000 (with 4 reserve pigeons which must be activated at R1, 250each before race 1) or 6 pigeons at a cost of R7, 000 (with 3 reserve pigeons which must be activated at R1, 250each before race 1) or 1 pigeon at R1, 250, plus a reserve which must be activated before race 1 at R1, 250.
Races: (Figures based on 1200pigeons entered @ race 1)
We will have a 9 race series with a total prize-money pot of over R700 000, 3 short distance races (between 250km and 350km), 3 middle distance races (between 400km and 500km) and 3 long distance races (between 560km and 700km). The 9th race will be the final race from no less than 650kms.
Prize money on race 1, 2 and 3 will be R25 000 per race with 20 prize-money positions each, the winner of each race will win R5000.
Prize money on race 4, 5 and 6 will be R35 000 per race with 20 prize-money positions each, the winner of each race will win R5000.
Prize money on race 7 and 8 will be R50 000 per race with 20 prize-money positions each, the winner of each race will win R7500.
Prize money on the final will be R200 000 (R50 000 1st place) there will be 20 prize-money positions on the final race.
We feel that we will then have a final race with bigger prize-money on offer but also have another 8 races where you can win back your entrance fees plus make some money if you have one or more top performance pigeons.
